With the promise of the temperature finally rising, it’s time to shed those woolly cardigans and thermal tights and start showing some skin. There’s no denying that a summer glow boosts your body confidence, but remember the only safe tan is fake tan.
So take your pick of these gradual fake tans and get ready for (hopefully) some scorching weather:
Clarins Delectable Self Tanning Mousse, £22
Clairins have created something special here – moisturiser, tan and sun protection in one. Although the SPF is only 15 and I definitely wouldn’t recommend using it as your only sun protection if you’re sunbathing, it’s reassuring that it’s there if you apply and head out the door bare legged immediately. The mousse texture gets some getting used to if you usually use a lotion or spray, but apply with a mitt and you’ll have perfect, even coverage that lasts about 2-3 days unless you want to go a shade darker.
Sampar 3 Day Weekend, £34
Ok, so technically not a tan per se, but Sampar have created something better. 3 Day Weekend is a moisturiser with a tan activator that stimulates your natural melanin levels – the pigment that is necessary for creating a tan in the first place. By increasing your melanin levels, you can have achieve that natural glow all year long. But don’t forgo your daily SPF – remember UVA rays will still age your skin even if the weather is cloudy and overcast.
Caudalie Divine Legs, £26
Forget streaky legs and orange knees, Caudalie have created the perfect formula for adding a hint of bronzer to your limbs without any patches. Apply with a mitt and get an instant shimmer that illuminates and tans. And the best bit – it dries instantly so no zombie poses while it dries!
Garnier Summer Body Moisturising Lotion, £5.29
One of the best (and cheapest!) gradual tans around. I still reach for this old favourite when I need to be guaranteed a streak-free hint of colour. And it smells of sun cream – what’s not to love?
Melvita ProSun Tanning Gel, £20
Even the most scent-sensitive won’t be able to get a whiff of fake tan from this little product. Melvita have excluded DHA (the chemical that is present in most tans that gives off that biscuity smell) in their natural formula. Instead it contains Erythrulose, an innovative plant-based bronzing agent that is derived from sugar cane to deliver a delicate, long-lasting glow.
